October means Halloween and Halloween means pumpkin patches full of pumpkins.

Honestly, we do not celebrate Halloween (a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31^st), however we do enjoy visiting our local pumpkin patch every year. So many shades of brilliant orange, yellow and green colours in one place, so much variety of squash and super-sized pumpkins!

One of the traditions of Halloween is carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns. We have only tried to carve a pumpkin once and it was a disaster and since then we never attempted to do it again.

This time of the year for us though, does announce the arrival of cooler weather, of gentle breezes and the end of humidity.

It also brings in the mad desire to eat and cook with pumpkin and squash – they make great side dishes and marvelous soup.
