Matheson Hammock Park and Beach is a special place in Miami, a park with a tiny beach that looks like an enchanted lagoon, bicycle paths, a lake with a sign that says “Do not feed the Alligators” and in the middle of this tropical setting, there is a restaurant called Red Fish Grill that used to be a former beach pavilion.
Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes were made with Aji amarillo crema, sitting on a bed of frisee. These giant balls of crab were delicious and very well complimented by the Aji Amarillo sauce. Aji amarillo is a South American hot yellow chile pepper that is used in many traditional dishes. This version of the sauce was very tame because of the addition of crema; fresh cream similar to crème fraîche.

Chilean Sea Bass: Crispy panko garlic sesame crust, sautéed spinach, shitake mushrooms, ginger sushi rice, sake soy mirin reduction. This was the biggest piece of fish I have ever seen on a plate. We are talking massive. This was not my dish and I did not taste it but my daughter swears it was divine.

Pan Fried Red Snapper Fennel and red onion salad, yucca chips, lemon ginger vinaigrette was nice; just nice, nothing spectacular.

Double Bone Pork Chop included corn pudding, caramelized onion, Swiss chard, Benton’s bacon . This dish was really good, the caramelized onions being an asset to every element on the plate.

The Caramel Flan was a bit too sugary for me: a huge slab of flan served floating in a sea of caramel sauce and topped with coconut flakes. Don’t get me wrong, it was delicious but I like my desserts gentler. My brother on the other hand, devoured it in a blink of an eye.

This is quite an unusual location for a restaurant, inside a park. Red Fish Grill is open for dinner 7 days a week. The food is good but not especially remarkable; the ambience and service more than make up for that making a visit to this restaurant an overall worthy experience.

Please keep in mind that the items on the menu change, this is what we had when we visited. Reserve an early dinner, sit on the patio and watch the glow of the sky after sunset: you will not be able to help but fall in love with this gem of a place.
