Pupuseria LA PALMA, Restaurante Salvadoreño

Eating a pupusa was something I had to do so when we visited the Redland Market Village, we stopped by a pupuseria called La Palma, a Salvadorean restaurant. They had a big menu, serving mostly fast food, but I was mostly interested in the pupusa.

What is a pupusa? According to Wikipedia, “Pupusa is a thick flatbread from El Salvador made with cornmeal or rice flour, similar to the Venezuelan and Colombian arepa. It is usually stuffed with one or more ingredients. These may include cheese, chicharrón, squash, or refried beans.” The one I ordered was the pupusa revuelta, and it was served with a green hot sauce and a slightly fermented cabbage slaw called curtido. It was delicious, albeit, very unattractive.

My dining companions ordered the beef tacos and chicken fingers with fries – also tasty but not good-looking dishes.

Food from left to right – Chicken Tenders with Fries, Tacos de Carne Asada, Pupusa Revuelta.

The atmosphere at Pupuseria La Palma was airy and happy, with Latin music blaring in the background. Now that the pupusa craving has been satisfied, I can take that off my bucket list.

Here is how to make pupusas – something I will never do because it is A LOT of work!
